APC PRESIDENT CDE THEMBA GODI PLEDGES APC DEDICATION TO FREE AND FAIR LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS 2011

PROMOTING ELECTORAL DEMOCRACY TOGETHER:

Presentation by the President of  the APC Hon. Cde Themba Godi

IEC 03/03/2011

Chairperson of the IEC,   Dr Brigalia Bam, Comrades, fellow South Africans.

As the APC we re-iterate our commitment to free and fair elections.

The right of the people to freely choose their public representatives is enshrined and guaranteed in our Constitution. It is a right which the people suffered and sacrificed for.                                                    However, it is in the positive conduct of each of us Political Parties or as Leaders that right becomes a reality and not just words on paper.

In the “long” years of our existence as the APC we have observed all established rules of the game. Therefore, the APC looks forward to these coming Elections with hope and confidence. Hope that we will have these elections in a carnival atmosphere and not one of tension, that our polemics will be filled by policy discourses and not insults, name calling, threats or downright thuggery. Politics is supposed to be a competition of ideas. Let it be so.

We accept that there is no party with an official policy to break or undermine the Electoral Code. The challenges, however, is for us as leaders at all levels of our parties to ensure that we don’t have cadres on the ground who believe that their party must prevail “by any means necessary”.

Whilst, we in the APC, congratulate the IEC for your work in delivering “free and fair” elections and express our full confidence in you- the same can not be said of the Municipal Demarcation Board. They are not operating in the democratic spirit of transparency and popular participation. Some of their ward demarcations are blatantly prejudicial and utterly illogical. The Demarcation Board is an important institution that needs to be vigorously engaged going forward.

The APC also calls on our people to come out massively to register on the 5th and 6th March 2011.

The APC also remains firmly and fully committed, not only to free and fair elections in 2011, but to our long term vision of a society that is democratic in form, non-racial in character and socialistic in content.

Thanks

Themba Godi
